Parents Avenue is ready to debunk breastfeeding myths – what’s fact, what’s fiction, and what’s absolutely bonkers with Dr. Alagammai Ramanathan, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu. Are you ready? Let’s dive into it.
Myth #1 Breastfeeding? It’s a piece of cake.
Breastfeeding takes time to work. It’s an art that needs to be learned and perfected. No two mums are the same just like no two artworks are identical.
Myth #2 Breastfeeding hurts! It’s unavoidable.
False. If it’s done the right way, then it’s enjoyable and easy.
Myth #3 Washing your nipples before breastfeeding is necessary!
False. Nipples are clean. However, do take hygienic steps like cleaning them with water while taking bath and washing hands before breastfeeding.
Myth #4 Does nipple shape really matter?
False. Any shape is fine as long as it’s not inverted.
Myth #5 Will working out change the way your milk taste? Hmmm.
False. Working out is healthy for the mum and a healthy mum produces good milk. So, it’s good to work out and keep fit.
Myth #6 Does smaller breast mean smaller amount of milk?
False. Milk production is from hormonal influence. The more we feed and on a good diet with lots of water intake, milk production will be good.
Myth #7 Formula and breastfeeding at the same time is a big no-no.
Maybe. Adequate milk is the best from the breast, so the baby doesn’t experience nipple confusion. But if the milk from the breast is inadequate we can’t starve the baby. Cup feeding or spoon feeding with formula will be good.
Myth #8 If I skip my feeding will it affect milk production later?
False. However, it will cause pain to the mum so it’s better not to skip feeding.
Myth #9 Breastfeeding when sick? Not a good idea.
False. This depends on the mum’s sickness, most of the time it’s okay to feed. Your doctor will be the best person to tell you if it’s safe to feed or not depending on the medications taken at that point of time.
Myth #10 Medication while breastfeeding is discouraged.
False. Depending on the sickness. We do have medications that is safe for breastfeeding mums too. So, please discuss with a medical personal before taking the medications.
