Being a dad is one of the most unparalleled experiences in life. From the moment we hold our baby for the first time in our arms to supporting our children behind their major milestones, dads are there every step of the way. To show our appreciation for all dads, we’re exclusively interviewing Roger Wang on his meaningful experience on fatherhood.

Hi Roger, nice to meet you! Can you tell us more about yourself?

My name is Roger Wang. I am 45 years old. Born and raised in Kota Kinabalu.  I have been married to my wife, Claudina, for 14 years. Our daughter Sara is 12 years old.

What are your best and worst experiences as a dad so far?

At my best, it’s definitely being able to watch Sara grow and get through all the milestones in her life.  And, at my worst, it was dealing with a sick child and not knowing what to do.

What advice would you give to new dads?

New mothers have a 9 months head start in parenthood. There is already that deep bond between a mother and child even before birth. New fathers only begin bonding after birth. So it is normal to feel left out. You just need to be patient.

What did you like from how your parents raised you and would you like to repeat that with your child?

The freedom and support to try new things and pursue my passions.

What type of dad do you picture yourself to be?

A good friend to laugh and cry with. A mentor to prepare her for life.

What have been your challenges so far?

Finding the balance. Knowing when to hold her hand and when to let her go. When to let her fall, so she knows how to pick herself up again. It’s a balance that changes every year as she grows older.

How involved are you in fatherhood duties?

That has evolved over the years. Currently, I take care of most of Sara’s school affairs. The sending and pickup. Homework and revisions. Extracurricular activities.
