“Fathers, like mothers, are not born. Men grow into fathers and fathering is a very important stage in their development.” –David Gottesman

Society for Equality, Respect And Trust for All Sabah (SERATA) is acknowledging the importance of fathers who are present in their children’s lives through their inaugural event – Celebrating Fatherhood Campaign, in conjunction with Father’s Day.

The campaign, comprising of a recently launched photography competition “Best Fatherhood Moments” and an upcoming exhibition in June, is about highlighting stories about active and engaged fathers. This is a spin-off from SERATA’s founder Sabrina Aripen’s personal project in 2018, where she collected stories and photos of 10 fathers that were published on Instagram through the account @kitaserata.

While the personal project had garnered some traction, Sabrina through the now registered nonprofit SERATA, wishes to take it further and bring such stories where it is easily seen by the public – through a photography exhibition in a popular mall.

According to Sabrina, “To me, having a father that cares for his children is an important piece to the puzzle of solving many problems that face our world today. many single mothers would not be suffering in poverty if the former husband cared enough for their children to also took half of the load to provide for their needs instead of expecting her to shoulder all the burden by herself.”

A factsheet published by UNICEF titled “Men’s Roles and Responsibilities In The Family” stated that in the United States and Malaysia, 40 and 50 per cent of divorced fathers, respectively, pay no child support at all “One of the barriers for working mothers is the mental load, which is the continuous cycle of thinking, planning and organising domestic life,” Sabrina continues.

“Having a supportive partner in a husband, who takes a load off by being an active and engaged father that takes on some of the childcare and household tasks, would go a long way in helping her have more time for herself and focus on her career.”

“Not to mention, men who are involved would value the tremendous effort it takes to raise a child. This will make them more participative in issues of proper family planning,” she added.

Photographers and photography enthusiasts, as well as all interested parents are invited to participate in the “Best Fatherhood Moments” photography contest. Submitted photos need to be of high resolution, as they would be printed out for the exhibition should they be selected to the top 25 photos for the photo exhibition to be held on 14-16 June 2019 at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall.

The Celebrating Fatherhood campaign is supported by Suria Sabah (Venue sponsor), Parents Avenue (Media partner) and the Sabah Family Planning Association (Exhibition partner). Being a brand new nonprofit, this event is fully dependent on sponsorships and donations.

The top 3 winners will be selected based on popular votes from the public. Winners will receive trophies, a night stay at either Farida’s Bayshore Dream in Kuala Penyu, Zara’s

Boutique Hotel or Hotel Gaia 95 in downtown KK. They will also each receive a voucher for a full mouth check up and dental spa from Phi Dental, Suria Sabah. The winner of the first prize will also receive a pass for 5 sessions of one-to-one training at Fitpro Empire in
