Chan Yin Keen, DC, the principal chiropractor and founder of One Spine Chiropractor opens up to Parents Avenue about how One Spine Chiropractor started, good benefits of chiropractic care, considering chiropractic care as primary healthcare and why helping people feels so good.

How it all started

“Basically, One Spine Chiropractor came about because I was asked to return to Malaysia from Australia where I was practicing four to five years ago.” Chan Yin Keen, DC, principal chiropractor and founder of One Spine Chiropractor shares.

After landing in Kota Kinabalu, he began his work search by entering the workforce.

However, he found that other centers in Kota Kinabalu offering chiropractor care weren’t to his preference in terms of patient care.

“Most of the other places were a little bit different in the way they were more high volume, and just adjust people and get out.”

He opens up, “I prefer to work with a patient a bit longer so, we’ll be doing things like looking at their rehab, and making sure their muscles are working correctly.”

Where his chiropractic dream came from

“Mainly, it’s my dad. He used to see a chiropractor, it helped him a lot with his neck and lower back pain.” Chan recalls.

After choosing to pursue the chiropractic course at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, he realized the beginning was going to be an uphill battle.

“Quite frankly, I hated it at the start because it was a five-year course with a three-year bachelor’s and a two-year master’s,” he laughs, “the bachelors was tough, but the masters was a lot better, in the sense, I could put into practice what I’ve been learning the whole time.”

Through experiencing how his work affected his patients he treated, that’s where the uphill battle stopped, and where inner triumph began.

“That inspired me to keep on doing what I’m doing and help people out, live their best lives. Seeing the patients get better is my primary drive.

Services offered at One Spine Chiropractor

One Spine Chiropractor currently offers several services ranging from chiropractic spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy, exercise rehab, and sports taping.

Chan explains his work ethics presses more towards a different approach in comparison to chiropractors centers in Kota Kinabalu.

“If you’re asking how that sets us apart from other places, I do think we are very patient-centered and we try to look at it as a holistic thing. We want to make sure it covers everything.”

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

“So, most of the time what I’m looking at are people with sports injuries, and people who are not very mobile. For example, people who’ve been sitting at their desks for too long or just standing still for long periods.” Chan explains.

He expands that most of what he does is to ensure that all his patient’s joints are all moving smoothly and can return the range of motion as much.

Other than, he ascertains that there’s no pain or discomfort while moving joints. “We also look at the spine, but we do look at body areas such as shoulders, wrists, knees because there’s a joint to be worked on there too.”

Considering chiropractic care as primary healthcare

Chan weighs in that people should consider chiropractic care as a primary healthcare practitioner.
“Yes, I do think that it’s something that people should come in and get a look at.” He encourages them to see a chiropractor if they’re experiencing discomfort in their lower back, headaches or neck pain.

“By and large, all chiropractors are well-trained to diagnose and treat muscular and skeletal problems, such as problems with muscles and joints and at the same time, detect if there’s anything else going on, like cancers or anything like that.” He said.

“If that might be the case and then we’ll refer a patient to the appropriate specialist.”
